Portia Lee James DeGeneres (also called Portia de Rossi) is a famous Australian as well as an American actor, model and philanthropist. She legally changed her surname at age 15, adopting a name she liked 'Portia' after the Shakespearean character in the play 'The Merchant of Venice.' Portia thinks that this was the most daring thing she's done in her life and stated that the urgency to change her name was due to her struggle about her sexual identity. Portia made her debut in film, with a romantic-comedy drama titled 'Sirens' where she co-starred with Hugh Grant. She also has acted in several American television movies and series including 'Too Much",' 'Nick Freno The licensed Teacher and 'Arrested Development, and 'Better off Ted. Her character gained immense popularity for the role of a Bostonattorney based in the city of "Nelle Porter" on a comedy drama television series called 'Ally McBeal. The character she played was the main comic relief in the drama.
